TORONTO (CP) - Ontario's education minister says delinquent students are going to get more support from school boards this fall.
Kathleen Wynne says the Liberals will introduce changes to the Safe Schools Act later this month that will drop the zero-tolerance policies brought in by the previous Conservative government. The zero-tolerance policies have been heavily criticized for unfairly targeting black youth and have prompted appeals to the province's human rights commission.
Wynne says it doesn't make sense to expel a student onto the street without helping the student reintegrate back into the classroom.
She says boards will get more cash to run programs and offer supports for delinquent youth.
Conservative Bob Runciman says the act has given expelled kids greater support and the province shouldn't "throw the baby out with the bath water."
